Winter is here and the bad weather has begun. Winter weather causes a lot of accidents so it's important that you're prepared. Here are a few tips on how to make your vehicle safer on the road. These will be particularly important for delivery drivers.
Firstly, make sure that your van is in top condition by having a tune up. This will ensure that there are no underlying issues that have not been addressed. Cold weather puts pressure on your vehicle and will worsen any existing problems. Also, make sure to check your anti-freeze levels.
You should take the time to check that your defogger/demister and heater are working properly so that you can keep warm without you windscreen steaming whilst driving. You should also check that your windscreen wipers are in good working condition for the same reason.
Next, check your tires. Check that your treads are deep and your tyre pressure is at the recommended level. If your tyres are worn out you should replace them because balding tyres will cause your van to skid in bad weather.
Once you have checked your van over, you will need to check your on board tool kit for winter essentials. Tools that you should carry in the winter include: an ice scraper for your windscreen, a shovel for clearing snow off the ground, a tow rope in case you get stuck, some rock salt to melt snow and add traction and a thermos full of hot tea or soup to keep you warm.
It is a good idea to keep your delivery van covered or in a garage overnight so that it is does not get covered with snow. If it does become covered in snow, you should always brush the snow off the roof and clear your windscreens, windows and mirrors before you set out.
