Anyone who has ever moved is probably well aware of the stresses associated with moving home. For most, it should be positive experience as you transition from one chapter of your life to the next, however this can often be dampened by frustration and tension.

At AnyVan, our aim is to make your move as stress-free as possible, so to give you a helping hand and a little something extra, here are 7 tips to help you do just that.

Planning and Prep

As the old saying goes, “prior planning and preparation, prevents poor performance” and when it comes to a big house move we can’t stress this enough. In this case, the ‘poor performance’ in question, could lead to you tearing your hair out as last minute steps make your move much harder and stressful than it should be!

To avoid this, start getting organised well in advance. Write up a budget, book your removal company, start packing your boxes and letting people know you’re moving etc etc. The earlier things are sorted the better.

Time management

Good planning and prep will allow you to effectively manage your time. In turn, this will allow you to take your time on tasks overall making everything more calm and organised. Not only will good time management help make moving out stress free, but it will also make unpacking at the end much, much easier.
Making a dated moving house checklist, helps to give you a clear idea of what needs to be done and by when, whilst also letting you keep track of what’s already sorted.

Declutter

Getting rid of anything you don’t need, don’t use or don’t want ultimately gives you much less to pack. By selling, donating or disposing of these items at the earliest possibility, you can focus on packing the important things, in the knowledge that everything you have is going to your new home.

Think Positive

As trivial as this may sound, having a positive outlook on things can drastically help to decrease stress levels. Instead of thinking about how much you don’t want to pack or how much hard work it’s going to be loading and unloading boxes and furniture, think about how great it’ll be when you’re in your new home.
To help spread the positive vibes, consider having a leaving party or dinner and some form of celebration to christen your new home – this will give you something to look forward too.

Get Help

Although you’ll probably have already organised a man and van or removal company to help with the physical relocation side, you may also find it beneficial to have a friend or family member on side to muck in. Having someone you’re comfortable with throughout the process gives you a reassuring shoulder to turn to, which could in turn make things more fun and ultimately less stressful!

Don’t let the move take over your life

There’s no denying how big of a deal moving house is, but if you let it consume the entirety of your time and energy, this can easily drive stress levels through the roof. As previously mentioned, time management is key, and if you’re effective in this you should still be able to maintain your social life, and more importantly your sanity!
Instead of rushing home every night after work to continue packing, give yourself a couple of nights off to do whatever it is you’d normally do, whether it’s going to the gym or for dinner and drinks with friends.

Keep you removal company in the loop

As you get on with your packing, you may find that you have more than you initially thought. This isn’t uncommon during a house move, however the best thing to do is tell your removals company well in advance. This way they’ll have plenty of time to reorganise their transport and vehicle options if necessary.
Of all the things to increase stress levels on moving day, the inability to move certain items or the need to make several trips are definitely high on the list. Good communication with your chosen company will eradicate this.
