There are plenty of excellent reasons to consider moving to Spain from the UK: sunny weather, a rich culture to explore, fantastic living costs and a top-tier transportation system! Indeed, if you want to explore Spain, you can do a lot worse than doing so in the comfort of your own car.

Moving to a new country can be a lot more difficult than you might think, and having your own vehicle can make the process much easier. It will certainly make it simpler to explore your new home, as well as find a new job if necessary.

Luckily, you will have quite a few options for driving once you arrive in Spain. You may choose to take your current vehicle with you, or you could even get your hands on a new car after you arrive. It will be important to make a decision before the move itself, so that you can start securing the necessary paperwork and giving yourself a clear idea of how much you should expect to pay.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the average cost to transport a car from the UK to Spain.

Moving a car from the UK to Spain

Your first job will be to note down the age and exact make of your vehicle, as well as addresses for where your car will be picked up and dropped off. All of this will decide how much it will cost a removal company to Spain to transport your car to your new home. Most services will be able to deliver your vehicle at your new address, though depending on the amount of access available at your new home, you may need to collect your car at a different location and drive the last leg yourself.

You will also need to factor in VAT. If you have owned your vehicle for more than six months and have already paid VAT in the UK, you should not have to pay again when you export it to Spain. If you are transporting a new vehicle, on the other hand, you will need to pay an import duty of 16%. There will also be a registration tax to pay. This will be calculated based on the engine capacity of your vehicle, though on average you should expect to pay around 12%.

Cost to transport a car from the UK to Spain

The cost of shipping a car to Spain from the UK will depend on the make, value and age of the car, as well as the distance it will be transported. On average, your costs should be around £450 to £700 plus VAT.

The price of your service will usually be higher if you want your vehicle to be transported from door to door. While this will certainly be more convenient for you, it will usually be more economical to collect your vehicle from a port and drive the rest of the way yourself. Just keep in mind how difficult it can be to get used to driving on Spanish roads. It may well be easier to get the car to where it needs to be before you start practising on your own.

Buying a car in Spain

Another option will simply be to get your hands on a new vehicle once you arrive at your new home. You can avoid the hassle of shipping a vehicle, and your new car will also be oriented towards European roads, with seats, steering and other apparatus all flipped around. This will not be a bad setup to get used to if you are planning to stay in Spain long term, or if you are thinking of using a vehicle to explore mainland Europe.

If you want to purchase a car in Spain, you will need to either own property or be renting one for a year’s minimum. You will need to provide certain documentation:

    • Proof of ownership for your home OR a rental contract lasting a minimum of one year
    • Certificado de Empadronamiento (proof of residence) no more than three months old
    • Your Número de Identidad de Extranjero (NIE), your foreign ID number
  • Proof of income (if you are financing the car through the dealer)

It may well be that you will need to travel to different parts of Spain in order to find the best possible price for your vehicle. For example, many expats find that purchasing vehicles on the south coast of Spain is often far more expensive than doing so elsewhere.

You should also think carefully about exactly what kind of vehicle you require. In Spanish cities, for instance, it is often easier to navigate and park if you are driving a smaller car or a moped.

Another point to consider will be whether to opt for a new car or buy second hand. The used car market in Spain tends to be more expensive than in the UK, simply because people hold onto cars for longer and there is less choice available as a result.

At the same time, the market for new cars in Spain is highly reputable. Spain is the second largest car manufacturer in Europe, and while most of its vehicles are exported, it is still fairly easy to find a good dealer.

Buying a new car may cost around €1,000 more at minimum than a used option, but you will also get a proper warranty in exchange. With used cars, private sellers must provide a six-month guarantee, but if you encounter a fault it will often be difficult to prove it existed when the vehicle changed hands.
