There are many excellent reasons to consider moving to Spain from the UK: sunny weather, a rich culture to explore, fantastic living costs and - especially in the cities - a top-tier transportation system! But, if you want to explore Spain properly, there's arguably no better way than by car.

So, if you have a UK vehicle and want to bring it to Spain, you're in luck - we're here to help!

Moving to a new country can be much more complicated than you might think, and having a vehicle can make the process much easier. In addition, it will undoubtedly simplify exploring your new home and finding a new job if necessary.

Luckily, you will have quite a few options for driving once you arrive in Spain. You may take your current vehicle with you or even get your hands on a new car after you arrive. It will be essential to decide on the move so that you can start securing the necessary paperwork and clearly know how much you should expect to pay.

With that in mind, let's look at the average cost of transporting a car from the UK to Spain.

Moving a car from the UK to Spain

Your first job will be to note down your vehicle's age and exact make and the addresses for where your car will be picked up and dropped off. All of this will decide how much it will cost a removal company to Spain to transport your vehicle to your new home.

Most services will be able to deliver your vehicle to your new address, though depending on the access available at your new home, you may need to collect your car at a different location and drive the last leg yourself.

You will also need to factor in VAT. However, if you have owned your vehicle for more than six months and have already paid VAT in the UK, you should not have to pay again when you export it to Spain. If you are transporting a new vehicle, on the other hand, you will need to pay an import duty of 16%. There will also be a registration tax to pay, which will be calculated based on the engine capacity of your vehicle, though on average, you should expect to pay around 12%.

The cost of shipping a car to Spain from the UK will depend on its make, value, age, and transport distance. On average, your costs should be around £450 to £700 plus VAT.

The price of your service will usually be higher if you want your vehicle moved from door to door. While this will likely be more convenient for you, collecting your car from a port and driving the rest of the way is more economical. Just remember how difficult it can be to get used to driving on Spanish roads.

Buying a car in Spain

If you want to purchase a car in Spain, you must own property or rent one for a year as a minimum.

You will need to provide specific documentation:

Proof

Proof of ownership for your home OR a rental contract lasting a minimum of one year.

image-15982

Residency

Certificado de Empadronamiento (proof of residence) no more than three months old.

Your ID

Your Número de Identidad de Extranjero (NIE), your foreign ID number.

Your finances

Proof of income (if you are financing the car through the dealer).

You may need to travel to different parts of Spain to find your vehicle's best price. For example, many ex-pats find that purchasing cars on the south coast of Spain is often far more expensive than doing so elsewhere.

You should also think carefully about precisely what kind of vehicle you require. In Spanish cities, for instance, it is often easier to navigate and park if you are driving a smaller car or a moped.

Another point to consider will be whether to opt for a new car or buy a second hand. The used car market in Spain tends to be more expensive than in the UK because people hold onto cars for longer, and often, fewer choices are available.

At the same time, the market for new cars in Spain is highly reputable. Spain is the second largest car manufacturer in Europe, and while most of its vehicles are exported, it is still easy to find a good dealer.

Buying a new car may cost around €1,000 more at a minimum than a used option, but you will also get a good warranty in exchange. Private sellers must provide a six-month guarantee with used vehicles, but if you encounter a fault, it will often be difficult to prove it existed when the car changed hands.
