At AnyVan, we talk a lot about the importance of hiring a professional when organising a moving day. It isn’t just about protecting your belongings, though this is certainly important; an experienced company will also be able to advise you when it comes to planning the moving day, while also providing all the insurance, manpower and specialist equipment your move could require.

However, not every moving day needs a lorry and an entire team of movers to help out. If you live alone, or if you just don’t have very many things to pack up and take to your new home, it may well be more sensible for you to hire a man and van firm.

We know that white van men have something of a reputation, but this has become far less of a problem over the last few decades. The growth of the internet has made it much more difficult for poor-quality van firms to get away with providing a bad service. That is not to say that you shouldn’t be careful about who you hire, but if you know what to watch out for, you could find that it is much cheaper to move with a man and van.

Hiring a man and van

Generally speaking, a man and van company should be able to provide any services you need for a moving day – just on a smaller scale. House removal services are fairly common for van firms, so candidates will usually offer:

  • Furniture removal
  • Collection and delivery
  • Furniture assembly/ disassembly
  • Waste disposal
  • Packing (with or without packaging provided)

Certain companies may also offer specialist services such as piano removals, office removals or help moving with a cat or dog.

However, it goes without saying that the average white van will be too small for larger removal jobs. Many firms will offer hourly rates for hiring a single van and 1-2 people to handle the heavy lifting. If this kind of option would leave you without space and help to handle all of your belongings, you may have to pay the rates for a second or third van. Alternatively, you could have the same team spend additional hours helping you, though if you are moving a long distance this could turn a moving day into a moving week. In either case, you could end up paying as much as you would with a standard removal company.

The crucial lesson you’ll want to take from this is that before you decide on the best possible option for help on your moving day, you should have a solid idea of exactly what you will be taking with you, and how much of it. You should have a good idea of the volume (and ideally the weight) so that you can ask about the capacity offered by removal and white van companies. If you do not have far to go, it may well be that you can make several trips with the same team in one day, which could still turn out cheaper for you.

Is it safe to hire a man and van company?

Some people hold onto an old stigma about man and van companies, but this is highly underserved. Virtually all white van firms are just as eager to please as any other businesses. However, the same rules for finding reputable businesses also apply to van companies.

What do we mean by this? First of all, it will be safer to hire an established company (Like AnyVan obviously) than a purely casual white van man. The business should have a legitimate online presence, with an email address, phone number and, ideally, plenty of positive reviews (we’re got thousands on Trustpilot).

The second point to look out for will be insurance. If you have any particularly valuable furniture, electronics, decorations or treasured possessions, you will not want to risk damaging them without being able to cover the costs.

With a professional man and van company, insurance should be offered as standard. Employees will be protected with Public Liability Insurance (PLI), and your belongings should be covered with Goods in Transit insurance. However, you cannot take this for granted, so be sure to check!

To make sure that you will be fully protected, be sure to tell your chosen candidates in advance about exactly what you are transporting, as well as its value. This will allow them to make time to provide specialist equipment or additional coverage if necessary. They may even inform you that they will be incapable of doing the job, in which case you should ask if there is anyone else that they can recommend.

How much does it cost to hire a man and van?

As we mentioned before, most man and van companies will charge hourly rates. Our Man & Van services start from just £26. These will depend on:

  • The size of the vehicle
  • The number of employees
  • The travel distance
  • Additional insurance
  • Storage costs
  • Extra services (packaging, disassembly, reassembly, etc.)

Generally speaking, most moving jobs take around six hours. Try not to be too conservative when estimating the amount of time you will require; there is always something that can go wrong on a moving day, whether this means road closures, broken furniture or anything else.

If you want to avoid overspending, it will usually be best to ask for fixed jobs quotes rather than hourly rates. This will give you a better idea of exactly how much hiring a man and van company will cost. However, additional costs may still apply if the job runs overtime.

For moves which only require smaller vehicles and teams, hiring a man and van firm may well be cheaper than hiring a professional removal company. However, it will still be worth contacting larger removal companies, the simple reason being that they will usually offer services of this scale for smaller, more local jobs. The rates may even be at the same level, though it will be up to you to make sure.

Remember, the more time you give yourself to iron out the details of your moving day, the easier it will be for you to collect quotes. You must also give yourself enough time to find well-regarded companies to choose from. Waiting until the last minute may leave you with a sub-par service  – as well as late booking fees!
