How much does a man and van cost?
Sometimes you're not looking to move a whole house, you're just looking to move your 2-seater sofa, deliver a chest of drawers or send a few large items to storage– hiring a local man and van is likely the way! But when it comes to getting a quote, it can get a little confusing, especially as man and van services work in different ways.
Man and van costs at a glance
Man with a van services are typically quoted in two different ways: based on an inventory (like AnyVan!) or at an hourly rate. Hourly rates for a man and van are typically £36-57 an hour, depending on your location, the size of the team and vehicle you need, as well as distance travelled.
| 1 person average hourly rate | 1 person full day rate | 2 person average hourly rate | 2 person full day rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| £36-£57 | £360-£570 | £96-£152 | £960-£1520 |
Local man and van prices
One of the biggest factors affecting the cost of a man and van service is where you're based. You can expect overall rates to be higher in cities like London where congestion is higher, parking costs more and demand is high. On the other hand, in more remote areas, you may need to travel further, which can also increase the cost.
It's worth noting that most man and van services in the UK have a two-hour minimum booking policy to cover loading, unloading, and potential delays from traffic, parking, or other unexpected issues.
While hourly rates can look like a better deal initially, moves usually take longer than you expect. The further you're travelling, the more this price can stack up – take the time to weigh up whether a hourly-rate man and van provider is the right choice or whether inventory-based, like AnyVan, will keep costs down.
Here we've provided the average price of a man and van service (based on fixed inventory pricing), as well as the equivalent hourly rate.

Man and van costs by distance
The cost of a man and van service will also depend on the distance of your delivery, as this will affect fuel costs and travel time. Unlike man and van providers who quote hourly, AnyVan's price is inventory-based, which means your price accounts for the distance travelled – no matter how long it takes, we'll get the job done. Going for a fixed rate based on your inventory removes the uncertainty about travel times and worries of increased costs.
In the table below you can see that for fixed-cost moves based on your inventory, the further you need to transport your stuff, the more expensive it becomes overall, but the more cost effective it is per hour.
| Distance band | Average price | Equivalent cost per hour |
|---|---|---|
| 0-2 miles | £56 | £63/hr |
| 2-5 miles | £50 | £52/hr |
| 5-10 miles | £56 | £45/hr |
| 10-20 miles | £63 | £41/hr |
| 20-50 miles | £80 | £36/hr |
| 50-100 miles | £112 | £31/hr |
| 100-200 miles | £161 | £27/hr |
| 200+ miles | £275 | £27/hr |
What size man and van team do I need?
If you have any large or heavy items, or lots of stuff to move, you may need a two-person team, which tends to be more expensive. AnyVan makes the job easy – we assign the right size van based on your items, and you can select a one or two-person team. Your quote will update in real time.
| Team size | Average price | Equivalent cost per hour | Best for... |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-person | £77 | £36/hr | Single furniture item |
| 2-person | £151 | £51/hr | Large items or small house moves |

What is included in my man and van quote?
Our man and van service includes the van itself, as well as a professional, vetted driver chosen by us, who will deliver everything included in your inventory. Your driver will also have the necessary materials, such as straps and blankets to protect your belongings in transit. Every move include £50k fire and theft cover as standard, so you know you're protected (see T&Cs for details).
If you'd like an extra pair of hands or help with dismantling and reassembly, you can add these when creating your quote.
Does AnyVan do hourly rates?
We don't, but it's for good reason! We quote based on your inventory and where your belongings need to go. This allows our technology to combine different moves together and optimise for the most cost-effective journey, with the least miles travelled. We give you an instant price that is fixed based on the information you've given us.
This also saves you the hassle and extra fees you might run into with hourly rates from delays, such as traffic or difficulties getting your items in and out of the property.
How do I get a cheaper rate?
We try our best to keep our costs low without compromising on the quality of the service we can offer. Our advice is to book as far in advance as possible and on a weekday, if you can. A few days before your move we recommend checking everything is accounted for – this will make sure the price you see is exactly what you'll be charged. You can update your booking up to 48 hours before your move.
Do man and van prices include fuel and mileage?
Indeed, they do! Your quote takes into account the distance travelled to complete your move.
What affects the cost of a man and van service?
The main factors that go into your man and van quote with AnyVan are the items you're moving, how far they're travelling, and whether you need one or two drivers to help with the move. When and where you're moving your stuff to/from also makes a difference – for example, a weekend booking for a London delivery will be more expensive than a weekday delivery in the North West of England.
How do I know I've got the best possible rate?
It's always a good idea to get more than one quote, so you can weigh up the quality of service against the expertise needed. If you're moving anything of value, you won't want someone who'll cut corners. Take a look at local reviews and make a shortlist of potential options before you commit. And don't forget, AnyVan has a price match guarantee for like-for-like services!
